The Volga  is the longestriver in Europe; it is also Europe’s largest river in terms ofdischarge and watershed. It flows through central Russia and into the Caspian Sea, and is widely viewed as the national river of Russia.

Eleven of the twenty largest cities of Russia, including the capital,Moscow, are in the Volga’s watershed (drainage basin).

The Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed inland body of water on Earthby area, variously classed as the world’s largest lake or a full-fledgedsea. It is in an endorheic basin (it has no outflows) located betweenEurope and Asia. It is bounded to the northeast by Kazakhstan, to the northwest by Russia, to the west by Azerbaijan, to the south by Iran, and to the southeast by Turkmenistan.
